The Crusaders – Keep That Same Old Feeling 05:33Playing Time: 01:18:19Total Size.: 469.39 MBNFO generated on.: 3/23/2015 12:07:28 PM———————————————————————MH1000 rateyourmusic.comOf all the Mastercuts Jazz-Funk series volume 2 is my personalfavourite, with volume 6 coming in a close second. As with most Mastercuts compilations, they have really pulled out thestops in making this a super fine selection from the selected genre. They haven’t totally concentrated on obscure tracks here, and italmost borders on soul in places. Even if you’re only remotelyinterested in jazz-funk, you will be able to sit through this whole albumwith ease as every track is a winner.

There are some real high pointshere though; Donald Byrd’s joy to be heard “Dominoes”, IdrisMuhammad’s very soulful “Could Heaven Ever be Like This”, but thekiller one for me is The Crusaders’ “Keep That Same Old Feeling”. TheCrusaders’ track was voted by my local radio station as one of the topten jazz-funk tunes of all time. I have to admit that I can’t disagree, itnever fails to send a rush of joy through me every time I play it.I’ve recently revisited this album and I initially neglected to mentionthat Tina Marie’s sublime groover “Come With Me” also appears onhere. Does this make it the finest jazz-funk compilation ever, I don’tknow, but it can’t be far from it.———————————————————————.

Mastercuts

There’s some choice cuts in the pile like “I Thought It Was You” from Herbie, “La Cuna” from Ray Barretto, Roy Ayers’ “The River Niger” and Hubert Laws’ “Family”. As the series went on the trend turned more toward R&B with a disco flavor. But Disc 7 was almost monstrous! Wilbert Longmire, Webster Lewis, War, Laws, James Mason, Cameo, David Benoit, even Sonny Rollins’ mish mosh “Harlem Boys” with those unmistakable disco riffs had some chops.
